America claims that it is a land of opportunity and home of the American dream. More and more it is only possible for those who have a bachelor, master, Ph.D. degree or someone who were born rich. Otherwise, the rest of people struggle and suffer, but still cannot achieve the American dream. The characters in “Fast food Nation” or in “Kill Floor” demonstrate that for certain kinds of people, such as immigrants, formal criminal, and people suffering from depression. It was impossible to pursue happiness here in America.

Since their job is mainly doing the same thing over and over again, which is not only boring but also stressful. As we all know most people pursue happiness in life, but not all people get it, instead land in unhappy circumstances. Some of the factors of Could Ilardi’s chapter 5 “Depression Cure” where the author mentioned ruminate and depression is linked. It is clear that it is also related to “Fast Food Nation” characters, for instance, workers there at the kill floor in the meat factory. Their work is repetitive, difficult for long hours, and under pressure, makes them ruminate most of the time. “Rumination is the habit of dwelling on negative thoughts, turning them over and over in your mind” (S. Ilardi. Depression Cure). Many employees take drugs to calm themselves or to get relaxation from stress and to get relief from negative emotion. They are stressed and depressed because their job is repetitive (Schlosser & Linklater). This kind of situation makes people depressed because they don’t get much chance to communicate, interact, or engage in a stimulating activity. Repetitions and long hour’s make workers over stressed them. They ruminate while working and turn to depression
