Innovation is what drives our economy. Without the constant creation of new inventions, products and services we would become stagnant. As our technological environment advances, products and services have taken a new angle, and as marketers it is our job to develop a strategy that produces the best possible outcome for the product’s introduction to the market.

Nowadays, innovation revolves around making products that simplify everyday tasks, like mowing your lawn. Although autonomous products are new and exciting, they may have a limited target market because they appeal most to early adopters. However, the functionality of the product may add markets.

My new product, a self-propelled, robotic lawn mower, is ready to be introduced to the market. Before I go forward, I must develop a targeting strategy for my new product, which involves defining the characteristics of the segment I may chose as the target market and why this market is attractive.

As a result of aging, people are unable to do that everyday tasks that they used to be able to do. The elderly cannot or should not mow their lawn because they are physically incapable of exerting the amount of force needed to push a lawnmower around their lawn for an extended amount of time. Their inabilities are a perfect reason why they should be a target market for the self-powered mower. A characteristic of the other segment, homeowners, is the dangers of the climate they live in.
