In the beginning of Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Ralph and Piggy develop a very odd relationship. The bond eventually progresses into something deeper, but is never truly appreciated or recognized by both boys. The relationship between Ralph and Piggy has the potential to save the entire group of boys, but is overlooked because neither believes in themselves or their combined abilities. The failure to appreciate their relationship eventually leads to the downfall of the island. When Ralph and Piggy end up together on the island, it is obvious that they are two very different people. Ralph is more serious and focused, while Piggy is talkative and excited to have a new friend. Ralph is the obvious leader out of the two, but Piggy proves that he is the brains behind the operation early on, by finding a conch shell that becomes a symbol of order later on (page 16). The two boys could have made a great team, but no efforts to work with each other were ever put forth. As the conch is blown and brings more boys near, we see Piggy giving everything he has to perform his task and keep order for Ralph. He takes the boys’ names and yells them to Ralph, but Ralph just ignores him (page 18). This is somewhat of an indication of how Ralph treats Piggy throughout the novel and how Piggy only wants to please his friend.
