Jereme Patterson Champion KW Comp I March 4, 2024 The Music That We Choose A lot of people listen to music and use it as a way to escape reality and enter new worlds. But what is it like to be the one performing the music? Writing music is already a complicated process that takes up a lot of time, but finally being able to share it with thousands of people is worth the wait. While people choose to form their own bands and share their favorite tunes with large crowds later on in life, the journey of performing music can start as early as 1st or 2nd grade. but other than that the jazz festivals are stress-free. The Musical only practices for about a month and then performs a usually two-act musical three nights in a row. It’s a great show to take friends and family to see and have a good laugh. The Jazz Choir performs at the Band and Choir concerts as well, but also goes around caroling during the Christmas season. Drumline goes year-round, starting with performing at Marching Band competitions in the summer to performing at basketball halftime shows in the winter. All of these concerts and competitions are a good way to sing and play music to influence the outside world and truly show how powerful music can be. No matter what grade a person is in, everyone performs the same. Sure, directors can be biased towards juniors or seniors and give them solos, but everyone works together to make a piece of music complete. Originally, a couple years back, underclassmen and upperclassmen would each have their own Band and Choir, and perform different pieces of music. On the day of auditions, it was very stressful not knowing who was gonna make it. I didn’t make it in the end, but I learned a lot from the experience. So yeah, the people who did make it into the All-State Band/Choir are extremely talented and hard-working individuals. While stereotypes from outsiders do give us some idea of where to improve or how we look at others, the main point of the music program is all about how we feel or act. The music program is a wonderful experience to be a part of because there’s a lot to learn about music, there’s supportive individuals in almost every subculture, and the music played creates a fun environment. The music program is important to me because I use music as a way to express myself and show others that it can influence their lives, too. I’ve also met many of my friends through music, and I’d like to make new ones in the future. Being a part of the many different subcultures within the music program gives a lot of opportunities to learn and grow through many different types of music. There’s something out there for everyone to
