Due to safety concerns, many states have increased the age at which teens can begin to drive. New Jersey, for instance, has raised the minimum driving age to seventeen and other states are pushing for similar or harsher restrictions. On paper, this seems like a good idea: less accidents, less fatalities and less strain on insurance. Upon harsher examination, however, the argument is flawed. Looking at the facts shows a reality that is often overlooked in legislative bodies. Increasing the minimum driving age is a horrible idea because it takes away a degree of responsibility that young adults need to learn, applies burden to families needing to transport their children, and puts more strain on public transportation for schools.
