Pete Carroll once said, “Each person holds so much power within themselves that needs to be let out. Sometimes they just need a little nudge, a little direction, a little support, a little coaching, and the greatest things can happen.” Those who love you help you overcome the hardships of life, by their words and acceptance of you which gives you the motivation, the support they provide that boosts your confidence level and their comfort will keep you going.
First, their words and acceptance of you will give you motivation. Certain words and phrases from your loved ones will have significant meaning to you, and ultimately the words of encouragement and support will motivate you because of who is saying them. In The Book Thief, during school, Liesel’s entire class had to read in front of everyone, one by one the teacher would call their name but, the teacher intentionally skipped over Liesel because she wasn’t at a certain reading level. The comfort will show you everything you have and what you can be grateful for. In The Book Thief, when Max becomes very sick and weak Liesel decides to give Max 13 gifts to represent her love for him. “All Liesel could do was watch the ball and its trampled, flaking skin. It was the first gift of many….If nothing else, it showed that she cared, and might give them something to talk about when Max woke up”(Zusak 321). When Max finally woke up, he found all of the gifts and realized how much the Liesel and the Hubermann’s loved him. The gifts and the comfort essentially woke up Max. Zusak use of the personification emphasizes the crushed and trampled soccer ball, which became Liesel’s first gift to Max. The quote communicates that even though the gift wasn’t worth a lot, to her it meant a chance that Max could wake
