I remember my first “clinical encounter” very clearly: I was in freshman year in a Biology major; a program that I wasn’t particularly enjoying, when my roommate burned his hands in a kitchen accident. I took the responsibility of caring for him and I would apply ointment on his burn wounds every day and help him with his daily activities. As he recovered, I realized that there was an intense satisfaction in helping and healing, which inspired me to embrace healthcare as a career option. I looked to further my science background. In addition, I worked at Chino Valley Medical Center during the summers where I developed billing software and databases for healthcare professionals. I then joined the University of California Riverside’s Global Medical Brigades chapter, a student-run organization that provides medical care to underserved communities in emerging countries such as Honduras, Panama and Ghana. …show more content…
I also volunteered as a pre-medical observer and shadowed a few physicians to learn more about the clinical setting. These experiences strengthened my desire to be in the forefront of providing care for patients and I took a step forward towards my goal, by enrolling in the Doctor of Medicine program at the Ross University School of Medicine. I was enjoying my time learning about the different aspects of the human body; but very soon I lost a close family member which left me devastated. I was far away from my family, filled with grief and unable to focus on my education; I left college early because of this tragedy and it took me some time to overcome this
