My First Read Aloud

Last week I had the opportunity to teach my first read-aloud lesson in a one-on-one teaching session. For this first lesson, I chose to prepare a lesson using David McPhail’s Edward and the Pirates which a book that encourages adventures through reading.

While I was planning this first lesson, I took into consideration the research on interactive read-alouds that I read about in Literacy for the 21st Century: a balanced approach by Gail E. Tompkins.There are five steps to an interactive read-aloud that I followed while preparing for this lesson (Tompkins, 2014, p. 443-444).

We began the lesson by reading the title and the author and discussing what he thought the book would be about. He predicted that this book would be about a boy named Edward and an adventure that he went on with some pirates. During the picture walk, my student made predictions and told me what he thought would happen in the book based on the pictures. He amazed me with how sound and accurate his predictions were. I figured I would get some very creative predictions from a first grader, but that is not at all what happened. As we read the text, I asked my pre-planned questions in order to build background knowledge and discuss the text. There were even a couple of times that the student interjected to add or change his previous predictions based on the text we had just read. He met every expectation I had for this lesson and then some. I anticipated that I would have to model going back into the text to find the answers after I had finished reading, however, he knew what to do as soon as I asked him to find the answer to my question. He was engaged with the text during the entire lesson. At the end of the lesson, he wanted to take the book home with
