I am confident in saying that I would be nowhere near the person I am today without my participation in school activities. Going beyond the classroom with my learning has not only forced me to get out of my comfort zone, but has ultimately helped me become a better citizen, particularly in the areas of leadership, community, and civic responsibility. Being engaged in extracurricular activities has helped me hone my leadership skills. Throughout my many years in the band, I have been a section leader and a member of the Band Council. This year, I was elected to be Band Council President, a job that requires me to be a voice for the majority of the band, from the band director. During my years of scholarly bowl, I have elevated my ability to work with others by understanding that everyone has different strengths, but if we all work together, we can accomplish our goals. On the van rides to and from competitions, I grew to cherish my team members and the time we spent together. This sense of community is something that I aim to continue elsewhere after graduation, whether it be in school or outside. Competing in forensics has given me a great sense of civic responsibility. Forensics is all about bringing an issue that you care deeply about to light, whether it be through a standard public address or some sort of acting event. Through performing, observing, and judging, my eyes have been opened to so many different problems we face as a nation. One problem that I want to assist with is the issue of achieving justice that many low-income individuals face. Thanks to the communication skills I have gained through this activity, I believe I will move on and become a public defense attorney because I feel it is my civic duty to ensure that everyone has a path to justice, regardless of their
