Officials admit violating security rules to access the cloud

According to a Fortinet’s global survey, there is a continuous growth of Generation Y employees in violation of corporate policies governing the use of mobile devices, storage of personal accounts in cloud computing servers and new technologies, such as smart watches, Google Glass and connected cars.

The results of an independent survey of 3,200 employees in 20 countries aged between 21 and 32, held in October 2015, show an increase of 42% in the initiative to break the rules in comparison with a similar survey of Fortinet held in 2014. Four Latin American countries were included in the study this year: Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Mexico.

About 36% of respondents who use their personal cloud computing storage accounts (eg DropBox) for work purposes said they would break any rule that aims at preventing them from accessing their data.

Although the percentage of Latin American officials willing to violate BYOD policies (45%) is slightly lower than the overall index, it is worth noting that, unlike the total sample indicating that companies with policies in place authorizes them to use their devices, in Latin America 55% of respondents said that the company in which they work does not have a defined corporate policy regarding managing the use of personal devices at work.

This represents an opportunity for companies to educate their employees about the importance of such policies and the possible negative impact to break these security measures.
