Ancient Peace for Greece
The Ancient Greek Olympics where they actually as peaceful as they are portrayed? The Games of Ancient Greece where first active in the year 776 (Pomeroy). The games themselves have been played for a very long time through several wars and was even stopped because of them three times. Peace during the games played a major role in the ancient times in order for the games to be completed smoothly. The Ancient Greeks where in constant battle and always training for a war to come, regardless if there was a war actually coming. Ancient Greece was a very warfare influenced location and centralized on three things for the majority: religion, war, and peace. The Olympic treaty that was signed by all the participles allowed safe travel to and from the games. This makes it so that all the competitors can get to the games safely and not run into any issues regarding the games so that all athletes can compete on an equal level. This treaty did nothing for current wars going on if there was a war being fought then it would continue. Some of the greatest warriors where in battle of course so that made the games a lot less intense and exciting. These peaceful games where held for three different gods. The games were played for religious and athletic reasoning. These were the Olympic Games at Olympia in honor of the god Zeus, the Pythian Games at Delphi in honor of Apollo, the Isthmian Games near Corinth in honor of Poseidon, and the Nemean Games at Nemea in honor of Zeus (Miller). The Olympic games where primarily focused on peace and creating international unity in order for a better Greece as a whole. For most of the participates the games were all about winning and becoming the greatest city state, so unfortunately most of the time the athletes did not agree with the main concept behind the games. The peace aspect of the games did however come into play during the games when one athlete would go up against another so that the two would have a fair competition, even though the gods would of course interfere, the two played fair. The games in fact relied so heavily on participation that winning did not come into play as much as participating did (Miller). The athletes who participated where just as honored and almost as well-known as those that won the events.
