Since July of 2014, I have been an Independent, maintaining a full-time position while in school. During the summer of 2014 my father, and primary provider, passed away. As my mother and he were not married, she did not receive any financial inheritance from his estate and as a result, my family and I were left without a car or a permanent place to call home.
I used the resources in my community to find temporary housing, a full-time job, and food assistance. For the duration of my senior year, I lived with two different families while my brother had already begun college, and my mother moved between friends’ homes.
