Personal Responsibility Essay

“No one gets left behind”. This is what the 1SG said as we prepared ourselves to embark on a mission in which we knew not all of us would come back alive. Is at times like these that you look to your left and look to your right and know that your life might depend on the person standing next to you, whether you like them or not. As a military leader you try to prepare your troops and instill in them the confidence needed at time like these, but as you look into their eyes you can see and feel the doubt creeping in them, after all we are only human. This to me is the ultimate personal responsibility, knowing that you are responsible for someone’s sons or daughter’s life’s and that they look to you as the safe keeper of their safe being is a lot of weight to carry for anyone human being. That is why I love the military and will ALWAYS considered myself first and foremost a military person, the camaraderie that it is built and the fact that you get to know and work on your strengths and weaknesses, both as an individual and as a team, I believe have prepared me for whatever life has to throw at me.

It is my belief that most people fail in life because they fail to be personally responsible to themselves first and foremost. Once we learn to care for ourselves and to hold ourselves to a higher ethical standard than society requires from us, we will have this thing call life licked. In order to accomplish most of the things that we want from life, one must be a stand-up person, by this I mean that if you ever promise someone something make sure that you come through, if you need to be somewhere at a certain time then get there!!, PUNCTUALITY is probably my biggest biased as I believe that being there will take care of 75% of any problem that you may encounter on any given day. Make sure that as a person you accept the accolades when you do well as well as the blame when we mess up.

Next I will talk about the necessity of people to try and avoid their personal responsibilities. As an adult it is hard to see when grownups shirk their responsibilities or take shorts cuts in order to get ahead in life, this type of actions set a terrible example for their kids and for our youth. It seems people try harder at not doing the right thing and violating their ethical barometer than at putting their best foot forward and attempting to succeed on their own merit, often times as history tells us taking a short cut merely results in double the work for the person or persons attempting to get ahead by doing the wrong thing. I believe that this is one of the major problems in America nowadays, we have gotten away from everything that our forefathers believed and taught us, in today’s society everything and everyone is about ME, is it all about instant gratification, gone are the days when we put in the work first and enjoy the fruit of our labor later as we have become a self gratifying society.
