I do not think that pop should be sold in schools. It dissolves tooth enamel, it can lead to obesity, and it gives you a sugar overload. A typical 20 ounce soda contains 15 to 18 teaspoons of sugar and at least 240 calories. Teachers would not let us just eat 15 teaspoons of raw sugar, so why would they let us have pop in schools?
First of all, pop dissolves tooth enamel. The way this happens is the bacteria that is already in our mouth feeds off the sugar in the pop, which produces acid. This combines with the acid in the soda, which dissolves the enamel. Once the enamel is dissolved, it can cause cavities which destroy the hard tissues of the teeth, including dentin and cementum. Twenty minutes after you consume a pop, your blood sugar spikes, causing an insulin burst. Your liver responds by turning any sugar into fat. Forty minutes later, caffeine absorption is finished. Your pupils dilate; your blood pressure rises; and as a response to this, your liver dumps more sugar into your bloodstream. The adenosine receptors in your brain are now blocked, preventing drowsiness. Forty five minutes later, your body raises your dopamine production, stimulating the pleasure centers of your brain (this is the same way heroin works). Also, many people drink pop for energy. This is a false sense of energy however, because you are on a sugar high for a while, but then you crash and you are worse off than before.
In conclusion, pop should not be allowed in schools because it dissolves tooth enamel, it can lead to obesity, and it gives you a sugar overload. Pop can cause many immediate problems, as well as problems later on down the road, so that is why I say “no” to pop in
