The first period is the Pre-Civil Rights Movement, where Africans were struggling to obtain freedom after the abolition of slavery. During the Reconstruction Era proposed by President Abraham Lincoln, the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments, were ratified to transform the south. The 13th amendment declared that slavery or the use of slavery is abolished. The 14th amendment granted citizenship to “all persons born or naturalized in the United States” including freed slaves. The 15th amendment granted African American men the right to vote. In the United States, the North and the South were completely different from each other due to their different belief of slavery.
