Abstract

The present study investigated the relationship between pre-sleep routine and the quality of sleep. Participants were treated with either a stressful or a calming pre-sleep treatment consisting of either stressful heavy metal music or calming zen meditation music. Upon waking, the participants completed a survey measuring the quality of their sleep. The results indicated no significant difference between pre-sleep routine and the quality of sleep. That is, the average difficulty falling asleep, number times waking up per night, ability to remember dreams, difficulty waking, feeling of restfulness upon waking, and number of hours of sleep was not

For example, some people take a warm bath and read for half an hour every night before bed. Others listen to music. Because getting a good night sleep is important to a well-functioning life it would be useful to know the type of pre-sleep activity that results in the highest quality of sleep. This study was conducted to investigate whether a calm and peaceful routine will result in a higher quality of sleep experience than an active and more aggressive pre-sleep routine. In this experiment the manipulated variable is the pre-sleep routine. The condition, or treatment, was alternated between a restful and stressful pre-sleep routine. The restful pre-sleep routine was soothing Zen music. The active and aggressive pre-sleep routine consisted of loud music. The responding variable is the quality of sleep and my feeling of alertness or tiredness upon waking. The controlled variables maintained will be the time going to bed and waking up and sleepwear. This in an important topic because we spend about one-third of our lives sleeping and improving the sleep experience will enhance a large part of
