The 1960s was a time in American history like not other. The times and culture was rapidly changing, and the U.S. as a whole was quickly evolving. This time period was permeated with many life-changing events for the American people. The two biggest events that occured during the 1960s were the assassination of JFK and the U.S. landing men on the moon. The murder of JFK at the time was a notion that shook the country. John F. Kennedy was proving himself to be a great president well ahead of his time. Kennedy knew exactly how to handle every situation the country could throw at him. When the economy was in a downward spiral, he increased government spending and lowered taxes (Danzer et al 679-683). Similarly, with the relations between the U.S. and the Soviet Union heating up, he created the flexible response and resolved conflicts with Cuba (Danzer et al 670-678). The United States knew they had a powerful and moral leader. However, this all changed on November …show more content…
being the first to land on the moon was nonetheless a spectacular feat upon his resume. The competition between the Soviet Union in the space race was higher than ever. Although Kennedy’s decision to fund a space program was heavily disputed as it could be seen as a misuse of money while Americans were starving, the pros outweighed the cons. When the U.S. was the first country to land a man on the moon, it gave us a sense of pride and uplifted human spirit. Furhtermore, it unified us as a country and showed the American people that if we set a goal, we can reach it. The last major benefit of this triumph was the advancement of science and technology (Man on the Moon). We wouldn’t be where we are today if it hadn’t been for the space program and the success of landing a man on the moon.
