The Journey to Adulthood According to the dictionary, rites of passages are ceremonies that mark transitional periods in a person’s life. For instance, in the Spanish-speaking community, girls are thought of as responsible women when they turn fifteen years old also known as quinceañera. The word quinceañera comes from the Spanish words quince meaning fifteen, and año which indicates year. The most anticipated birthday celebration for a girl in a Hispanic community is the quinceañera because they eligible for more responsibilities such as, work or marriage. The fifteenth birthday celebration is a journey into adulthood and is an important tradition in Hispanic communities. In fact, the quinceañera tradition originally came from the time when the Incas, Mayas and Aztecs were around. According to a popular Quinceañera article, one of the main purposes why this tradition was brought about was due to the fact that it was meant to build up the teenager girls into adults to benefit themselves and the tribe. I remember that my parents gave me a choice between this event to happen or money for a car. Nevertheless, about 4 ½ years ago I chose to have a quinceañera and it was a magnificent experience. In particular, there are many activities that are done in a quinceañera such as, wearing a big beautiful dress, attending mass, riding in a limousine with your friends, partying and simply celebrating another year. However, I only attended mass with my family in order to thank God for his blessings, but I did not want all those extra activities that are not necessary. Hence, having a quince was a good experience because it was a rite of passage that I had an opportunity to follow and keep the family tradition
