Particles must collide in order to react and the frequency of collision determines the rate of the reaction therefore, the greater the frequency collisions the faster the rate of reaction. Particles must collide in a minimum energy in order to react and we call this the activation energy. On a low temperature particles don’t have very kinetic energy and move slowly this means the collisions are less frequency and have a lower energy so the reaction will be slow. On a high temperature particles have more energy and move rapidly move this means the collisions are more frequent and have more energy so this reaction will be faster. If we increase the temperature the reactants will vibrate more making it more likely for them to collide and collide harder as they have more energy, meaning that they will have the activation energy to make reaction more likely. As the temperature of the sodium thiosulfate increased, the time taken for the mixture of sodium thiosulfate and hydrochloric acid to react decreased. This is shown in our test as the results show that at the lowest temperature of 10°C, it took 40.3 second and at highest temperature of 60°C it only took 10.2 second. This observation shows that the increase in temperature allows more successful collisions per second and therefore, increases the reaction rate. The higher concentration is a faster reaction and we can tell this because the line is sleeper. With high concentration, we got more product at the end, because we started with more reactant molecules at the start.
Effect of Surface area on a rate of reaction
Particles must collide in order to react therefore if we increase the frequency of collision we increase the rate of reaction. The rate of a chemical reaction can be raised by increasing the surface area of a solid reactant. This is done by cutting the substance into small pieces, or by grinding it into a powder. If the surface area of a reactant is increased, more particles are exposed to the other reactant therefore there will be a great chance of the particles to collide. The more collusion successful the more rate of reaction.
Compared to a reaction with lumps of reactant, the graph line for the same reaction but with powdered reactant Has a steeper gradient at the start and becomes horizontal sooner, showing that the reaction time is less.
