Young Adults and Jersey Shore: A Good Combination?

“Get crazy; get loud, if you wanna have fun let’s do something crazy…” Have you heard these words before? Perhaps, you may have heard it on television. If you have not guessed already, this is part of the theme song for the reality show called Jersey Shore. Although many teenagers adore and follow this show consistently, Jersey Shore is not a good example for young adolescents to follow (for this essay, young adolescents refers to people ages 13-20). The factors that make this show a poor example are inappropriate fashion, language, and behaviour/actions. An analysis of these factors will convince anyone that this show can be considered a bad influence on young adults.

The fashion in Jersey Shore is not suitable for young adolescents. The characters in the show are role models, so the younger audiences may end up following them. For example, Nicole ‘Snooki’ wears very revealing shirts and skirts. Moreover, the skirts are atrocious because some are transparent and are way above the knee. On the website called “Jersey Shore haters”, they talk about the show and what the characters do. For example, on the site, they make reference to each character’s unsuitable behaviour. Let’s take Sammi as an example. Sammi looks like a sweetheart, but truly she is far from it. For instance, she overreacts a lot and this was evident in one of the episodes where she ended up punching Ronnie on the face. Young adolescents may watch this and think that punching people on the face is a good way to solve a problem. Punching is not the only inappropriate behaviour on the show, other examples are: partying hard, bringing home total strangers, verbal spats, going to unsuitable shops, urinating in public places, intoxication,
