“Mistakes” – Response Health care has evolved into in a highly complex system with a vast variety of functions and the susceptibility to errors is inevitable. In addition to doctors, other medical professionals, such as nurses, therapists and technicians should own up and disclose any medical errors because concealment of errors may compromise recovery of patients. Moreover, medical professional have a duty of practice with integrity in accordance with their respective oath or pledge and code of ethics. Patients are at their worst and very vulnerable when they present a hospital for treatment. Slips, lapses and mistakes may stagnate or deteriorate recovery or even result in a fatality. For example an elderly demented patient come to hospital with generalized weakness. The falls whiles undergoing physical therapy in the hospital and this therapist conceal the fall. The patient deteriorates further and routine x-ray days later reveals some broken ribs and pneumonia. The worsen situation condition of the patient could have mitigated had the therapist not concealed the error. Integrity of nurses is enshrined in the American Association of Nurses code of ethics under provision 5 which states that “The nurse owes the same duties to self as to others, including the responsibility to promote health and safety, preserve wholeness of character and integrity, maintain competence, and continue personal and professional growth” (Morrisard, n.d.). That is to say the nurse should uphold high moral standards and be honest to admit mistakes especially when nobody is watching.
