Choosing to have someone else watch over your child can be a difficult decision for many parents to make. Fortunately, finding good day care programs in your area can make the process easier for both you and your child. Here are some tips for choosing the right day care for your family:

Visit all the classrooms: Most day care programs are divided up by age. For example, they may have babies in one room, toddlers and preschoolers in another, kindergarten through second grade in a third and older elementary kids in a final class. If your child is a preschooler, you may only think you need to tour the preschool room. However, looking at the other rooms can give you a better idea of how good the center is. Are there enough adults in the baby room? Are the grade school kids doing activities or do the staff simply sit them in front of a television? Knowing the answers to these questions can help you decide if you want to leave your child with these people.

Is a child punished if they decide they don't want to eat a snack? Some day care programs are more flexible when it comes to children who are having a bad day, for whatever reason. If your child is already used to half hour naps, but policy is an hour or more for nap time, you'll want to know if the children are allowed to color, look at picture books, or do other quiet activities during nap time if they wake up early. A good day care won't mind parents who ask questions and will be happy to answer
