In the short story Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst, there is lots of insightful information about mentally disabled people in 1918 and how they were thrown to the ground like unwanted trash. It gives us a blast from the past as it tells us that mentally challenged people are not accepted. The summer of 1918 Doodles brother said, “Nobody expects much from someone called Doodle.” This indirect quote gives you just a glance on how poorly mentally handicapped people were treated. The narrator ended up renaming his brother Doodle because he didn't want people to expect anything from his original name ‘William Armstrong’. He’s also giving himself a pat on the back for thinking he is doing something nice for Doodle, when in reality, it's for his own pleasure
