In The Scarlet Ibis we witness the tale of two brothers, one normal one not. It is an incredibly interesting, emotional story describing the relationship and connection between two close brothers. Although they have a very close bond, their relationship was hardly conventional. The brother treated Doodle with little respect and tortured him with harsh ways contributing to Doodle’s devastating passing. In The Scarlet Ibis, the theme of the story is that cruelty, torture, and savagery will only result in heartbreak and regret for the people who torment their victims. The Scarlet Ibis is a tragic story of the recounting of a man who was once the brother of Doodle, a young boy, unfortunately born with severe birth defects. The story comes from the narrative of a young boy whose name remains unknown, telling his account of his relationship with his late brother Doodle, formally William Armstrong. As the story progresses, we learn that Brother has grown embarrassed by his brother’s disability and seeks out to change it for his sake not his brother’s. Doodle is incredibly fond of his brother, undoubtedly because Brother is most likely Doodle’s one and only friend or role model.
