The Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals - Fifth Edition (CELF-5) measures the language skills of individuals ages 5-0 to 21-11. The CELF-5 is comprised of seven subtests that measure an individual’s understanding of receptive and expressive language in relation to semantics, syntax, morphology, and phonology. The results from these subtests can then be combined to obtain core language composite scores. The individual subtests are described below:

Sentence Comprehension (SC):
The SC subtest evaluates an individual’s receptive semantic knowledge. The results are obtained by evaluating the individual’s ability to comprehend sentences of increasing length and complexity.

A scaled score of 1 indicates that there is a severe delay in Caroline’s receptive semantic knowledge in comparison to her typical developing age matched peers. Caroline demonstrates difficulty comprehending the meaning of sentences that increase in length and complexity, as well as relating the meaning of the sentence to a similar picture.

Caroline received a scaled score of one on the Linguistic Concepts subtest, which places her in the 0.1 percentile. A scaled score of one indicates that there is a severe delay in Caroline’s ability to comprehend spoken directions with basic concepts in comparison to her typical developing age matched peers.

A scaled score of 7 indicates that Caroline’s expressive morphological knowledge is considered low average in comparison to her typical developing age matched peers.
