My motivation for becoming a social worker came about from my past experiences growing up. During my child and adolescent years I have witnessed and experienced families in a crisis. This had a profound effect on me after a process of soul searching as to the best use of my skills while at the same time satisfying my need to give something back, I have chosen my career goal to become a social worker. While dealing with stressful situations I have learned how to cope in a calm and sensitively manner. With this in mind I believe the social work path is best for me as it will allow me to use those skills in order to help and support others. I was not allowed to see my mother or brother during the time I was there and until it was safe for me to come back home. I was unsafe at home because my brother, who was five at the time, physically harmed me. So the therapist thought it was best that my brother and I were separated and made sure I was safe in a home until my brother was showing improvement in his therapy sessions. The foster care system has impacted me by knowing that there was a safe place. After doing research on the foster care system for my sociology practicum I have learned more about the system. There are many families who use and abuse the foster care system. They see children as a source of income rather than a person or a piece of life. This is where I have learned to talk to others in a non-judgmental way. As a social worker you cannot be a judgmental person because they experience different cultures. While working as a crisis counselor I have met a varied and diverse group of people from dissimilar backgrounds to my own. I have taken part in group activities in order to solve problems and contributed as a member of a team. The most prominent skill I enhanced on this course was my non-judgmental and open minded attitude. Working with people from different cultural and academic backgrounds proved challenging at times, but I enjoy a challenge and found that I bonded with and supported a number of people, developing an understanding of their situations and compassion for
