Solution-Focused Brief Therapy Solution-Focused Brief Therapy is a therapy that places its focus on finding solutions for the client, rather than placing the focus on the client’s problem(s). When a client sees a therapist that practices Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, the therapist will spend little time asking the client about their past. The main topic of conversation will be about the present and future of the client. Solution-Focused Brief Therapy is centered around positive thinking and creating a better life for the client. In Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, the client can expect their sessions will be, as the name states, brief. Sessions should not last more than 45 minutes in Solution-Focused Brief Therapy. (Iveson, 2002) During sessions, the therapist will learn what has brought the client in. Once the therapist has this information, they can begin to explore times when the client was not faced with the problem that brought them to therapy. By placing the focus on when the problem did not occur, but could have, the client and therapist can begin to find ways to repeat this positive behavior. Solution-Focused Brief Therapy refers to these instances as exceptions.
