Texting while driving has become an insurmountable problem in today’s world. Unfortunately, many individuals in today's plugged-in culture, especially young adults, have developed the risky habit of using their cell phones behind the wheel of their car. According to the National Highways Traffic Safety Administration, “Drivers in their twenties make up twenty-seven percent of the distrait drivers in fatal crashes.” A distrait driver is defined as someone who’s optical, physical, or cognitive operation has been the cause of the accident. Cell phones disturb all three of these functions; we must visually glance at our phones to see who has called, or what has been text. We manually text replies, removing at least one hand from the steering wheel, and we mentally place our focus on the message being sent or received and away from the road. Texting while driving is a problem that must be addressed, especially among young adults; cell-phone use while driving is not only distracting, but it is also extremely dangerous. …show more content…
According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention, “Each day in the United States nine people are killed, and more than 1,153 people are injured in crashes involving a distracted driver.” New drivers are added to the road every day; parents and teachers need to emphasize the dangers associated with texting and driving. Parents need to lead by example, if a teenager witnesses his or her parents texting while driving, then the parents are not only setting a bad example for their children, but they are also putting their family at risk. Schools should educate students by showing them examples such as the project that was done in Belgium, which tricked teen drivers into thinking that to pass their driving test. The students had to be able to text successfully and drive on a closed course. The results, which can be found on YouTube, are both funny and
