Throughout history, abortions have been a controversial topic to discuss. Some women believe it is their body and they may do what they wish, while others are completely against the idea of abortions. Abortions are cruel, inhumane acts that should be illegal because they cause economic distress, mental collapse, and cause relationship problems among the two individuals involved. Abortions are expensive procedures that can cause economic distress among women who undergo an abortion. According to The Nation, “The Guttmacher Insititute reported that 69 percent of woman are forced to pay an abortion out of pocket” (Pattillo 6). According to the article, “Effect of Abortion vs. Carrying to Term on a Woman’s Relationship with the Man Involved in the Pregnancy” of the women in the bivariate results, after one week 90% of the women were still in ongoing contact with the man involved, but by two years after the abortion the ongoing contact had fallen to 68%. In today’s society many men do not want to have children and when one shows up they leave the pregnant woman to fend for herself. Very few men marry the women they impregnated, if they are not already married at the time of conceiving the child. The article states that out of the women in the study only 3% wed after conceiving, this percent of women is a very small margin. Many people that struggle economically to afford the abortion procedure costs them an estimated $3,500. If they were to keep the child, according to the Huffington Post it would cost them “$12,800-$14,970 per child per year for a two-parent family with a median annual income between $61,530 and $106,540” (Thomas). It would cost approximately $230,400-$269,460 to raise a child till the age of 18 with basic necessities. Also, many of these women are lower class and by themselves, they cannot afford to keep the child. Going through with the abortion is not the only way women develop mental issues. Some women have struggled with anxiety and mental health disorders all their lives and have been medicated. However, there are a few cases in which abortion is logically acceptable such as, a woman conceives after being raped. According to PubMed.gov “Only 11.7% of these victims received immediate medical attention after the assault, and 47.1% received no medical attention related to the rape...50% underwent abortion… an additional 11.8% had spontaneous abortion” (Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology). Over half of the women had an abortion based on the fact that they were raped. This however, does not make the matter of abortion a positive aspect, abortions are an inhumane act that cause many women instability, physically and mentally.
