She was born and grew up in Chicago, Illinois on December 20, 1954 where she attended the Loyola University of Chicago and the University of Iowa. Cisneros is a hispanic author that includes her diverse culture in her writing. In the story Eleven Rachel is struggling to deal with her issue of being humiliated by her teacher. Her actions come to show that she has the ability to handle what the real world has in store for her. When Mrs. Price commands Rachel to “Put that sweater on right now and stop the nonsense”, Rachal reacts by saying “but it's not--”. (Cisneros 242). Even Though she hesitated to put on the sweater Rachel’s response to the situation was well controlled and well ordered. This displays that she has the ability to make mature choices and can handle the difficulties the real world has. In the short story There Was a Man, There Was a Woman the author Sandra Cisneros expresses her creativity by including the efforts the characters make to confront the challenges the real world has. This story begins with a man and a women who get paid on Friday and go to the “Friendly Spot Bar to drink and spend their money”. (Cisneros 245). The characters both have issues and emotionally isolate themselves from the world. They both feel lonely in the world and their action of drinking in hopes of the “words for what she was feeling would slip out more readily, but usually she just drank and said nothing” did not help. In the Short story Barbie-Q Cisneros use of imagery helps establish the theme and purpose she is trying to portray. She uses imagery to convey the theme and the purpose of her short stories. In the beginning of the story Cisneros uses imagery to help the picture and visualize the situation the characters are in. Cisneros describes the barbies as“Barbies smell like smoke when you hold them up to your nose even after you wash and wash and wash them... left foot that’s melted a little—so?”. (Cisneros 244). This description helps the readers paint a picture of the situation they are in. “Everybody today selling toys, all of them damaged with water and smelling of smoke.” (Cisneros 244). When Cisneros is describing the setting in the story she describes it as “fluorescent green wicker wastebasket, ... and a pink shag rug, and windshield wiper blades, and dusty mason jars, and a coffee can full of rusty nails”, “ Halsted Street burned down yesterday… the smoke still rising and drifting across the Dan Ryan expressway.” (Cisneros 244). These descriptions help maintain the idea that the environment is not the best and the character live in bad conditions.
