The Middle Fashion Analysis

Fashion is defined as the style or styles most popular at a given time (Frings, 2008). This week we are reviewing ABC’s television show called The Middle. This particular episode was about a teenage girl named Sue Heck who wanted a very expensive pair of jeans to feel more confident for her drama club try-out. She convinced her mother to buy these jeans much to her father’s dismay. Before Sue could even wear her new jeans to the drama club try-out, her mother shrunk them in the dryer. Sue felt as if her life was ruined (Babbit, Heisler, Heline, Hunter, & Hunter, 2010). I believe that almost all people can relate to needing a particular item to feel fashionable and confident. We as consumers use fashion for several reasons. Reasons such as filling an emotional need, to impress others, to be accepted, and be attractive (Frings, 2008). It did not matter at all what type of jeans or sneakers that I owned. Neither of those items have anything to do with who I am as a person today. My boys are now at the age I was when clothing and shoes matter. My oldest son does not really care what he wears, so long as it is soft and comfortable. My youngest son is the complete opposite and wants everything to be name brand and flashy. They are definitely opposite. Sometimes I feel guilty because I do typically buy my youngest son the name brand clothes that he wants. Most of the time though I try to buy them when they are on sale. I try to teach my boys that clothing does not make a person who they are. I also try to teach them that we should be kind to everyone and treat people as we want to be treated. My goal as a parent is to raise decent human beings who see people for who they are and not what they wear. As long as I accomplish this, I will consider myself a successful
