In August 1945 the United States dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. On August 6, 1945, an American plane dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. Instantly, nearly every building in the city collapsed, taking down the city’s population of 280,000 civilians and 40,000 soldiers, approximately 70,000 died immediately (Foner 705). On August 9, the United States dropped a second bomb over Nagasaki, Japan killing, the same number civilians from the first bomb.
