The Southern Colonies consisted of Maryland, Virginia, North and South Carolina, and Georgia. The Southern colonies’ economy was almost entirely based on farming. To maintain their thriving economy they needed more workers so they started using indentured servants and slaves to keep it alive.
The Headright System was a way for the rich plantation owners to get indentured servants across the Atlantic. They would give fifty acres of land to the planters who brought the indentured servants over. Each servants’ trip would be paid by their owner. Once they had arrived, a contract would be written that specified the length of the service, which was usually five years. While living with their new master they would get a room. Before their time with
