I read the book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, chapters 16-23. In these chapters the court hearing of Tom Robinson happens. Many people give different opinions of what happened the night of November 21st the night of the said raping. During the hearing, there is a feeling of what is being said that Mayella Ewell lied about being raped by Mr. Robinson. Also, you learn who Tom Robinson is portrayed as in the book. In this Journal, I will talk about why Mayella seemed like a liar and what kind of person Tom Robinson is.

Mr. Finch, it was way last spring” (Lee 255). It shows that what Mayella and her father had said about asking him to chop a chiffarobe was correct, but it wasn’t that night it was last spring according to Tom. Many people may believe that this black man is lying, but he’s Atticus’ client and an honorable man like Atticus wouldn’t tell his client to lie in court. This makes a fishy statement about Mayella and how she may be deceiving the jury. Also, a reason that it seems as though Mayella isn’t telling is her father. In the first place, Bob Ewell is a drunk. He uses his money towards whiskey and from this he isn’t the nicest person to his kids. When Scout’s father was questioning Ms. Ewell on how her father treats her, she said he is fine until he drinks. This says that he is most of the time a bad father and treats the kids wrongly and can show that he may abuse them. From this Mayella could be scared of her father and not want to rat him out, making her be dishonest. Another reason that her father is left handed. Being left-handed may not show much in the case
