The understandings of national identity at the time was not the same for everyone due to the variety of opinions; some key events that created different views of the United States overseas expansion in the late 19th and early 20th century were: the publication of The Monroe Doctrine, Manifest Destiny, the addition of the Roosevelt Corollary, and the American victory in the Spanish - American war lead to widespread public support for expansion. The Monroe Doctrine and the Roosevelt Corollary did not support the idea of the United States expanding overseas. However, Manifest Destiny and the American victory in the Spanish - American war was for expanding the United States overseas. He mentions that the Filipinos were not prepared for self-government and needed American assistance; coming to the conclusion of acquiring the Philippines and helping them for their own good in a Christian mission style. This supports oversea expansion through the eyes of a person who just wants to help those who can't help themselves.
The fourth document is by Jane Addams, a white female. She shares that the United States participation in the Spanish - American war or any war is unjustifiable, opposed to peace, and encouraging violence in her hometown, Chicago. This was publicised immediately after the Philippines acquisition. I interpret this document as opposed to oversea expansion because Jane was opposed to war and I believe that she wanted the United States to stay where they were, as far as territory, and not mess with any other countries, thus avoiding conflict and war.
The fifth document is by Theodore Roosevelt and he mentions that the United States is responsible for providing government for the Philippines and says that anyone who is against acquiring the Philippines is just afraid.
