Another aspect that 1776 failed to engage in was George Washington’s true role in the American Revolution. George Washington was indirectly mentioned in the musical 1776, however as a founding father fighting for the freedom of the nation, he should have been included more predominantly than he was. George Washington did not sign the Declaration of Independence because in July 1776 he was in New York preparing to defend Manhattan against the British. In his book, Setting the World Ablaze: Washington, Adams, Jefferson and the American ____Revolution, John Ferling describes how one important figure was never claimed to be a Founding Father, but should have been; George Washington. He was a military leader and the future first president of the new nation. While often called the ‘Father of America,’ Washington did not sign the Declaration of Independence. True to American history, in 1776, there is mention of Jefferson crossing out the anti-slavery chamber and claus himself. This was after two separate parties stepped up to tell him he wouldn’t get the votes without its removal. While prior to the creation of the Declaration of Independence, the Bradley explains that the continental congress had already adopted resolutions against the slave trade throughout 1774 to 1776. However, those acts created increased tension with the South and created a greater separation between states. Unfortunately, these acts were never mentioned in 1776.
