Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury was written in 1953, long before television and technology reigned supreme, and in it Bradbury foreshadowed some issues that could arise as technology continually evolved. The novel is set in the 24th century, where technology and television come before everything, and focuses on a young man named Guy Montag. In the 24th century, firefighters are no longer the heroes that extinguish fires. They instead are the ones that start them. Books are illegal and they are to be burned if any are found. If someone is found to have books in their home, the firemen must come and burn down the house. Montag becomes interested in books and begins to reevaluate his happiness when he meets his new neighbor, Clarisse McClellan. …show more content…
Montag’s major revelation came when he was forced to burn down his own home after he is turned into the fire department for having books in his possession. In the heat of the moment, Montag turns the flamethrower on the fire chief and his fellow firefighters, immediately turning him in to a wanted man. Montag is able to escape just before a bomb is dropped on the city. In the end, he finds similar company in a band of free thinkers, professors and scholars, who, like himself, rejected the norms of their modern society and choose to preserve the knowledge that books contain.
