Through 1933 to 1945, there were some non-Jewish civilians who helped Jews survive the Holocaust and resist Hitler. But a few stood out the most, like Carl Lutz, who saved thousands of Jewish people with paperwork, and Freddie and Truus Oversteegen, who lured Nazis into traps by seducing them or assassinating them from their bikes. These three and some others will be talked about more in depth in this research essay, starting with Carl Lutz. Carl Lutz was a Swiss diplomat who represented the political interests of 12 countries. He rescued 10,000 Hungarian Jews, mostly made up of children, and they were allowed to emigrate to Palestine under protective documents. When Hungary was invaded by Germany, Carl leaked what was called the “Auschwitz protocols,” and deportations were suspended. Mr. Lutz then created around 40,000 protective documents for Jewish people to emigrate to Palestine. He also built and used 76 buildings as safe houses that housed 20,000 Jewish refugees under Swiss protection. When the death march came around, he and his wife made documents to pull the Jews out of the march. In total, he rescued around 62,000 Jewish people from the Holocaust. The Nazi’s turned the daycare into a detainment center for children. Johan and his colleagues,students and headmistress of the daycare worked together to move some of the children to a room at the college. They hid them there until it was safe to smuggle them out by Dutch resistance groups. Van Hulst had the horrible job of choosing who to save, knowing whatever children were left behind would be sent off to die at concentration camps. They were able to save 1,000 of the 4,000 children that came through the detainment center from
