When colonists travelled across the vast ocean to get to the Americas, they imagined that America was an extraordinary place. They believed the Americas offered limitless opportunity, where you could start a whole new life. They travelled six long weeks at sea and when they arrived, they realized the horrible state that the Americas were in. The British were consistently taxing the colonists and making them pay for the wars that England was going through. Colonists believed that England had no right to tax the colonists for the war that the colonists were not even taking a part in. Furthermore, the colonists had no say in the British government about these taxation and acts that the British imposed. The colonists wanted to self-govern themselves because of the upsetting experience they had when arriving in the Americas and the distance between the Americans and the British. Soon after the colonists came to the Americas, they realized the state of the colonists that the British put them in. Because of the financial plan that William Pitt came up with, Britain was trying to pay off debts from the Seven Years War.
