Why I Want To Go To College

I was born and raised in one of the islands of Philippines. Living in the Philippines was a beauty but financially difficult for our family to get through day by day. My parents sold everything they had in exchange for a better life in the United States. We moved to Los Angeles after I graduated from High School and lived in a makeshift room for a while till my mom could find a better job. Coming from having everything to one day nothing, have made me appreciate how much hard work entails and how it shouldn’t hinder you from ever reaching your dreams. As a first generation college student, I hope to someday give back to my community, most specially my home country. Unfortunately, my parents couldn’t afford to send me to college so; I went to vocational nursing school first to help me get through college. I work as a charge nurse in a skilled nursing facility by night and a student by day. It is a thankless job and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. All of my experiences cultivated me to be the person I am today and also drives me to become successful and happy. I learned to be persistent with all the things I venture on and to always strive to be humbly exquisite of all the things I do under any circumstances. My passion for research was sharpened by my work at Dr. Barry Milavetz's laboratory in the University of North Dakota. I witnessed a revolutionary ingenuity and collaboration to achieve a goal. In the laboratory, I experienced the fine line between theories being taught in the classroom setting and its application to the real world. This experience definitely challenged me in a way that a classroom setting couldn't compare, I learned to think critically in ways studying in a less subjective exam
