Numerous black people in history have affected how society looks at them today. These people accomplished incredible things to allow people to look at them differently. Black History Month is a time in which we celebrate the important and major people and events that occurred in the history of African Diaspora. Black History Month is celebrated for the entire month of February to show its importance. One of the many African Canadians that have affected the way we look at blacks is Harry Jerome.

Who was Harry Jerome? Harry Jerome was a track and field runner that represented Canada. He was born on September 30, 1940, in Prince Albert, Canada. Unfortunately, Jerome died on December 1982 due to a brain aneurysm. He was the grandson of John Howard who was a railway porter who represented Canada in the 1912 Summer Olympics. Jerome was a person that never gave up and a person that strived for the best. He worked incomparably hard to become a successful athlete. He was a talented athlete that excelled in a variety of sports, including baseball and football. However, his speed was the key that helped him succeed in the world of sports. In my opinion, Black History Month is also a month in which we remember not to judge people because of their skin colour and looks. We should all acknowledge the importance of Black History Month because we should recognize how blacks were mistreated due to their difference in skin colour. Harry Jerome was one of the enormous amount of blacks that recognized this issue. Thus, he decided to become a famous athlete to fulfill his true ambitions and also stand against racism.
