Color guard is by definition a sport due to its physical and competitive aspects, and also

an art due to its elements of expression and beauty. During the English Reign around the Civil

War era, there were pipers and drummers. Along with the band, they always sent a soldier to

carry their “colors”. It was decided that although they had music to please the ear, they had

nothing to please the eye thus, color guard was created. It started from showing your colors with

pride and being fierce and standing up for yourself and that is why so many people enjoy it. It

includes flag, sabre, and rifle and technique is very important. Color guard has long been known

There should be a flap on the inside of the flag material to

tape it down to the pole. Make sure it is pulled tight down the end of the pole and that the

biggest weight is still toward the top of the pole.

Doing spins and tossing is one of the first things that anyone in color guard should learn.

When learning how to do a spin whether it a speed spin or a drop spin it is always important to

remember that the flag stays at the belly button when its spinning. Drop spins are simple. Hold it

at a right angle which includes a boxed right elbow, left hand towards the stomach, and the flag

should be straight up and down. Coming down from the right angle, one must let go with the left

hand and turn the flag to the left while also bringing the flag down towards the belly and

grabbing it under your right hand. When one grabs make sure to keep the thumbs pointing the

same ways.

Obtaining a new skill can be very difficult to do sometimes but in the end it can be worth
