Mrs. Calabria,

Recently, I've thought of something that I think you need to hear about. Us kids at VMS, work very hard during the week. We wake up early to come to school and sometimes we might have a test first period, or in other cases a presentation or a project we have to turn in. As you probably can imagine, the performance of students early in the morning is substantially less proficient that it is in the afternoon classes, this can cause a huge disadvantage for those of us who have important things early on in our days. Getting up at 7:00 in the morning may not seem like a big deal, right? But when you take into account that most kids don't go to sleep until past eleven o'clock, it's a bit different. We hardly get as much sleep as a doctor recommends— up to ten and half hours, and we don't always preform as well as we could in our first few classes. The problem of sleep itself is easy to address, but I have taken it a step father in considering what we could do about it.

Research has shown that kids bodies don't even feel really tired until past eleven o'clock at night, so the constant blame pinned on the kids for "not going to sleep early enough" isn't very accurate at all. When kids take tests in the morning I bet there will be a difference to those kids who get to take it later in the afternoon.

These two alternatives to our current situation would be super helpful in our school. I think that students and teachers could benefit from a better understanding of what time school should really start. The stress levels would decrease, and the high scoring on testing would increase, it's a full proof plan! I really hope you will take my ideas into some serious consideration!

Sincerely,
Niamh
