Why School Should Start Later

One example that shows school start times should be earlier is their grades. If school started early, they could improve a lot. Many students' grades are very low and not passing. This is because they don’t receive the hours of sleep they need to function. For example, 93% of high schools and 83% of middle schools in the U.S. start before 8:30 a.m.(American Psychological Association). This really shows how early kids have to wake up and are expected to do their very best every weekday at school. No, it doesn’t. This is not fair for the other states who are starting before 8:30 am and even earlier, no it isn’t. This is why all states should adopt a later start time. Another reason school start times should be earlier is to improve students' performance and attendance at school. If school start time was earlier for every school in the United States, schools would have less tardiness and less absent students. Many students are absent or late to school due to the early time. If school start time could get pushed back by at least 30 minutes, it could bring down tardiness and the amount of absent students. One example is, “Scientists recommend that teenagers aged 13 to 18 years should regularly sleep 8 to 10 hours per day for good health.” (American Psychological Association). The average teenager goes to bed anywhere from 10:30 to 11:30 at night. Waking up at 6:30 leaves them with only 8 hours or less. This ends up causing many students to be late to school or absent. Missing vital school time by being absent or late takes away time for learning. On top of that, not getting enough sleep also involves health risks. These include being overweight, drinking alcohol, smoking, and using
