South Killed Reconstruction Reconstruction died, but who killed it? In 1869, the first college football game between Princeton and Rutgers began. In 1877, the first easter egg hunt on the white house lawn took place. The south killed reconstruction, because the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) was part of the south, they distracted Grant, and there was a ton of racism. The election of 1867 destroyed the dreams of millions of black americans. The reconstruction was mainly about unifying the eleven states in the confederacy. When Hayes was elected, he put an end to an already dying effort. The South was in ruins, and either the north or the south destroyed reconstruction. Grant couldn’t handle all of the problems the KKK were creating, so he had to focus on that instead of reconstruction.
