“ Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal,” said Abraham Lincoln in his Gettysburg Address speech giving to the people November 19, 1863.

Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States was born in Hardin County, Kentucky, on February 12, 1809. Lincoln had a what you called a rough childhood his family wasn’t necessarily wealthy or well known. When he was young a lot of things happen that you don’t want to have to go thru as a child. He lost his mother and his father moved away from him forcing Abraham to go and work on his own. But, as the years went on he also had thirst for knowledge which you don’t see all the time This led him into going …show more content…
He had an interest in public issues so he stood for public office and in 1847, he was elected House of Representatives for Illinois and served from 1847-49. In 1858 Lincoln was nominated as Republican candidate for the Senate. Even tho he lost the 1858 Senate election, his debating skills caused his to become well known within the Republican party. On February 27, 1860 he was invited to give a notable address at Cooper Union in New York the reputation he gained for doing that caused him to be put in as a candidate for the Republican nominee for President in 1860. After hard work and not a lot of hours of rest Lincoln was finally elected President in 1861. Growing for many years, Lincoln resolutely opposed the breakaway of the South, and that led to the American civil war with him committed to preserving the union. The Civil War was a lot harder and more intense then people anticipated and sometimes Lincoln began to lose some support of the general population. But he never gave up hope he kept fighting for his country and that’s what leaders do. On September 22, 1862, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation that declared the freedom of slaves within the Confederacy. He also gave a speech
