Barack Obama for the American People
When Barack Obama was inaugurated on January 20th, 2009, the whole world watched as history was made. The United States of America now had their first African American president. Achieving this was not an easy task. Obama was put through many trials and tribulations in his lifetime and especially into his political career. He prevailed as an Illinois senator, enacted change, and advocated for his beliefs. The Obama family entered the White House with hardly a scandal to stain the elegance and pride that they carried, but with the responsibility of presidency comes a bombardment of unresolved issues. America had not left the war in the Middle East and Osama bin Laden was still a threat to national security

Since taking office, Obama and his administration have expanded opportunities for all Americans and especially for the LGBT community. As stated in his speech on June 26th, 2015: “We are big and vast and diverse; a nation of people with different backgrounds and beliefs, different experiences and stories, but bound by our shared ideal that no matter who you are or what you look like, how you started off, or how and who you love, America is a place where you can write your own destiny.” Obama worked with Congress to pass the Hate Crimes Prevention Act that would include any attacks on a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity. Concerning health, Obama developed and released the first comprehensive National HIV/AIDS Strategy that addresses the disparities that gay and bisexual men face. He stood up against the barbaric use of conversion therapy as well and released a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) study to condemn the practice. Under this act, hospital and primary physicians can provide their services with better health outcomes, lower costs, and improvement of methods of distribution and accessibility. This law has significantly decreased the number of Americans without health insurance. The CDC has reported that the percentage of Americans without health insurance has fallen from 16% in 2010 to 8.9% during the January-June 2016 period. In his speech to the Miami Dade College, Obama talks about the effects of this act: ”So because of this law, because of Obamacare, another 20 million Americans now know the financial security of health insurance. So do another 3 million children, thanks in large part to the Affordable Care Act and the improvements, the enhancements that we made to the Children’s Health Insurance Program.
