In the literary work Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger the reader is introduced to a troubled boy named Holden Caulfield that is suffering from depression. The song that represents Holden is “We Own it” by Wiz Khalifa featuring 2 Chainz. Holden is suffering from depression because Allie died even though he was an innocent kid and he said that he would rather take Allie’s place. These signs show Holden is pessimistic himself. Holden is suffering from depression so signs for this are suicidal thoughts or actions. The lyrics for this are, “I never feared death or dying” (l.14). Because Holden doesn’t fear of death so he says, “I’m sort of glad they’ve got the atomic bomb invented. If there’s ever another war, I’m going to sit right on top it. I’ll volunteer for it; I swear to God I will (141). This is showing that with Allie gone he has nothing to live for so to make himself useful he wants to commit suicide. However, he is also a constant liar he says he is a pacifist but fights. He also says that, “I felt like praying or something, when I was in bed, but I couldn’t do it. I can’t always pray when I feel like it. In the first place, I’m sort of an atheist” (99). This is showing that Holden is lying and that he doesn’t know if he is telling the truth or not. And on line 17 they sing, “Only God can judge me”. These lyrics are showing that even though he is atheist God can still judge Holden. Finally, Holden is lonely so to pass the time he tries to go to
