Adolescence, what is it? Adolescence is a time when a child transitions from childhood to adulthood. It’s a period when both physical and psychological side of a child begins to change. In the journey, the adolescent will face many tough situations and decisions such as drugs, family relationships, friendships, bullying, romantic interests etc. In the novel, “Cedar B Hartley” by Martine Murray and the film, “A Cinderella Story” by Mark Rosman, the issues of bullying and romantic interests are explored. In the text, Cedar is a twelve-year-old girl struggling through bullies and her love interest towards Kite. Likewise, “A Cinderella Story” describes Sam’s high school life towards bullies and her romance with Austin Ames.

Sam like Cedar struggles to cope socially at North Valley High school where all the “popular” kids call her the “Diner Girl” She also gets bullied by her step-mother, who told Sam that she’s not very pretty and she’s not very bright. Another example is when Shelby informed the whole school the “story” between Sam and Austin’s online relationship. This pulled down Sam’s self-esteem believing that she is not perfect for Austin.
