The Columbian Exchange was a major historical event because it had both major positive impacts and major negative impacts for the world that affected the future.

Major positive consequences that resulted from the Columbian Exchange include better health from improved diets, important medicine, and new professions such as coffee growing. This is still a major industry today! Other positive consequences include cattle ranching and creating schools.

While all of these are positive things, there are also negatives such as diseases and slavery. The Europeans brought diseases the Native people were not immune to.
